SOUTHAVEN PROPERTY CARE
A yard can have several problems at once. Weeds may be spreading through the grass, the soil may feel packed down, and flower beds may need more attention than occasional hand pulling can provide.
DeSoto Turf provides lawn and flower bed services in Southaven, MS, for these common concerns. Our services include weed control and fertilization, core lawn aeration, and flower bed pre-emergent treatments.
We assess where the problem appears and recommend the right service. Some properties need help with one area, while others need ongoing care for both the lawn and planted beds.
A PRACTICAL SERVICE PLAN
We start with what is happening in the lawn or flower beds. From there, we match the service to the condition instead of treating every property the same way.
Share the location and appearance of the concern. It may involve weeds, thin turf, pale grass, hard ground, or unwanted growth in the beds.
We consider the grass, weeds, soil surface, sunlight, moisture, mulch, and season. These details show what treatment can and cannot address.
The property may need lawn treatments, aeration, flower bed pre-emergent, or a combination. We explain what each recommendation is meant to accomplish.
We apply treatments according to the service and seasonal schedule. Weather, soil moisture, grass growth, and weed activity may affect timing.
After the visit, we provide the relevant watering, mowing, access, or flower bed guidance. We also explain what changes to expect.
DeSoto Turf provides three focused services. Each one handles a different issue affecting the yard.
Our eight-treatment program combines seasonal fertilization with pre-emergent and post-emergent weed control. The materials used change with grass growth and weed activity.
Core aeration removes small plugs from compacted lawn areas. The openings help water and air move below the surface and give roots more room.
This service combines removing existing weeds with scheduled pre-emergent treatment. It helps reduce new growth in planted and mulched beds.
SEASONAL LAWN SUPPORT
Fertilizer feeds the grass, but it does not control weeds. Weed treatment removes competition, but it cannot make thin grass dense when the lawn lacks nutrition or has another growing problem.
Using both services in a scheduled program lets the treatment change throughout the year. Pre-emergent is applied before targeted weeds begin growing, while post-emergent treatment handles weeds already visible.
Fertilizer supports the lawn when the grass is actively growing. Iron can also improve color without encouraging unnecessary top growth.
Poa annua, henbit, and other cool-season weeds may appear while warm-season grass is dormant or growing slowly. Early treatment helps keep them from taking over open areas.
Crabgrass, spurge, nutsedge, dallisgrass, and Virginia buttonweed become more noticeable as temperatures rise. Some need repeated treatment because of how they grow.
Deep shade, improper mowing, broken sprinklers, compacted soil, and poor drainage can all weaken turf. Correct those conditions separately when they limit the lawn.
Soil compaction develops gradually. Foot traffic, pets, mowers, construction work, and other equipment press soil particles together and reduce the open space below the grass.
Water may run off the surface instead of soaking into the root zone. Roots may stay shallow, and the lawn may recover more slowly during hot or dry weather.
Core aeration opens compacted ground without removing the existing turf. The soil plugs left behind break down naturally.
Ground near gates, sidewalks, driveways, and play areas often becomes compacted first. These sections may feel firmer and show wear sooner than the rest of the lawn.
Water that moves across the surface may not be reaching the roots. Aeration can help if compaction is the cause, but it can\’t fix a grading problem.
Grass that receives enough sunlight and water but remains thin may be restricted below the surface. We check for shade, irrigation, insects, and other causes before recommending aeration.
Pulling weeds improves the appearance of a flower bed, but it only removes what has already grown. More weeds can emerge when seeds remain in the soil or enter from nearby areas.
Pre-emergent creates a treated layer near the soil surface. When applied at the right time, it helps stop targeted weeds before they become established.
You still need to remove existing weeds. Pre-emergent also cannot prevent every weed, especially where digging, planting, or runoff has disturbed the soil.
Mulch covers bare soil and helps limit places where weeds can grow. Fill thin, washed-out, or displaced areas without piling mulch against plant stems.
Digging, edging, and installing new plants can break the treated layer. Disturb only the soil needed for the work and replace displaced mulch afterward.
A few weeds may still appear near bed edges or plant bases. Pulling them while they are small prevents flowering and reduces future seed.
WATER MOVES DIFFERENTLY
Southaven properties can have different soil conditions within the same yard. The DeSoto County Soil and Water Conservation District identifies Loring, Grenada, Falaya, and Collins among the county\’s major soils.
Some areas hold moisture below the surface. Others become compacted or shed water before it reaches the roots. Construction fill, grading, slope, and repeated traffic can add to these differences.
Increasing the run time for every sprinkler zone may soak one section without helping another. Before adding more water, check how it enters the ground and where it goes.
Hard ground may shed water during a long irrigation cycle. Shorter cycles with time between them may allow more moisture to enter compacted soil.
A blocked, buried, or poorly aimed sprinkler head can leave a dry patch. Running the entire system longer will not correct that coverage gap.
Ground that remains wet may have low grading, excessive irrigation, a leak, or concentrated downspout discharge. Lawn treatment cannot correct these problems.
The City of Southaven provides local drainage and runoff information through its Stormwater Program.
WHAT RESULTS LOOK LIKE?
These services work in different ways and on different timelines. Knowing what each one is meant to do makes the results easier to understand.
Scheduled applications can reduce targeted weeds and support grass growth. Results depend on the weeds present, grass type, weather, mowing, and irrigation.
Aeration creates openings in compacted soil and supports the root zone. Improvements happen below the surface before they become obvious above the grass.
Weed removal provides an immediate cleanup, while pre-emergent helps reduce new growth. Occasional hand pulling may still be needed between treatments.
AFTER THE SERVICE
Aftercare depends on the service completed. Follow the instructions provided for that particular visit.
Keep children and pets away until the application has dried. Follow the watering and mowing guidance so the treatment has time to work.
Leave the soil plugs on the lawn so they can break down naturally. Limit heavy use while the ground remains soft.
Avoid unnecessary digging or raking in treated beds. Keep mulch even and remove weeds as they appear before they mature.
